Understanding Breast Cysts

Breast cysts are one of the most common causes of breast lumps. While they can feel worrying, cysts are usually benign (not cancerous) and often resolve on their own. Understanding what breast cysts are, how they form, and how they are managed can help reduce anxiety and guide informed health decisions.

What are Breast Cysts?

  • Fluid-filled sacs that develop in the breast tissue.

  • Common in women aged 35-55 years, though they can occur at any age.

  • Do not increase the risk of developing breast cancer.

  • Usually stop forming after menopause, unless a woman is on hormone replacement therapy.

What causes Breast Cysts?

Cysts are thought to form naturally as the breast changes with age. They are linked to shifts in hormone levels, particularly in the perimenopausal years.

How are Breast Cysts found?

  • Many women with cysts have no symptoms.

  • Some may notice discomfort or pain, especially before their period.

  • Cysts often feel like a lump (soft or firm) and can vary in size.

  • They may appear suddenly, even overnight.

  • Cysts are typically detected during:

    • Physical examination

    • Mammogram or ultrasound

Treatment and Follow-Up

  • Most breast cysts do not require treatment.

  • Large or uncomfortable cysts may be drained with a fine needle under ultrasound guidance.

  • Cysts can return or new ones may form, but they are still not considered dangerous.

FAQs About Breast Cysts

Are breast cysts cancerous?
No, cysts are benign and do not increase breast cancer risk. Please note that even though cysts are benign (non-cancerous), any new breast lump should always be checked by a healthcare professional to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other conditions. Learn more about our mammogram services.

Do breast cysts hurt when pressed? Cysts can feel soft, like a water balloon, or firm, like a hard lump. Pressing on them may cause a sharp or aching pain, particularly if the cyst is large or under tension.

Do breast cysts always need treatment?
Not always. Many resolve without intervention. Treatment is only needed if they are painful or large.

Can cysts come back?
Yes, cysts can recur or new ones can form.

How do I know if a lump is a cyst?
A GP may suspect a cyst but will usually confirm with imaging such as ultrasound or mammography. At MIC Women’s Imaging we offer both ultrasound as well as mammography services. Request a call-back.
